22 weeks pregnant: what to know right now
Baby: Size of a papaya (~11 inches, ~1 lb) · Lips and eyelids forming, fingerprints set, responds to touch and sound · Body: Belly button flattening, Braxton Hicks possible, back pain, stretch marks may begin · Key milestone: Baby movements now definite and regular · Viability: 22 weeks is at the lower threshold of viability with specialist care
Here's everything happening with your baby and your body this week.
Leg elevation, compression socks, and staying active all help with swelling and varicose veins.

At 22 weeks, fetal movement has moved from occasional flutters to recognizable patterns. Understanding what's normal helps you know when to act on changes.
What movement feels like at 22 weeks: Most women describe clear kicks, rolls, and jabs — no longer just butterflies or bubbles. First-time pregnancies sometimes feel movement a few weeks later than subsequent pregnancies because there's less experience recognizing it.
When to count kicks: Formal kick counting (10 movements in 2 hours) is typically recommended from 26–28 weeks, but at 22 weeks you should be aware of your baby's general activity pattern. If you notice a day significantly quieter than usual, drink something cold and sweet, lie on your left side, and monitor for an hour.
What movement doesn't mean:
The anatomy scan (if you haven't had it yet) typically happens at weeks 18–22. At 22 weeks, it can still detect many structural abnormalities. See week 20 for details on what it checks.

At 22 weeks, your baby is approximately 11 inches (27.8 cm) long and weighs about 1 lb (430 g) — roughly the size of a papaya. From this point, baby begins putting on more weight — approximately 6 oz per week — as fat deposits develop under the skin.
Common symptoms at 22 weeks: visible baby movement, back pain and round ligament pain, belly button flattening or beginning to pop, stretch marks on the abdomen, hips, or breasts, Braxton Hicks practice contractions, and increased appetite.
22 weeks is at the absolute lower threshold of viability — survival rates with full NICU intervention are approximately 30–40%, and these vary significantly between hospitals and individual circumstances. This rises to around 50–70% at 24 weeks and 80–90% at 26 weeks. These statistics apply to premature birth, not to your current pregnancy.
22 weeks is in the second trimester, which runs from week 14 through week 27. You have approximately 18 weeks until your due date.
The anatomy scan (20-week scan, fetal anomaly scan) checks all major organs, limbs, and structures. It's typically scheduled at weeks 18–22. At 22 weeks it can still be performed and will detect most structural abnormalities. If you haven't had it yet, contact your provider to schedule it as soon as possible.
